The Blanský les PLA was designated as such on 12 December 1989 through Regulation of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic, with the total area covering 212 square kilometres, this including forestry land resources (56.6%), agricultural land resources (32.5%), areas of water  (2.5%), built-up areas (1.2% ) and other areas (7.3%). The PLA territory contains 20 specially protected areas and 18 heritage trees designated as such so far and is divided into 3 zones with regard to the natural values.

The PLA Administration has drawn up and approved a basic strategic document titled "Blanský les Protected Landscape Area Management Plan". Applicable for the period from 2008 to 2017, the plan outlines conservation and future actions in managing the PLA.

Three national nature reserves are NNR Čertova stěna-Luč, Žofínský prales and Brouskův mlýn and five national nature monuments are NNM Hojná voda, Terčino údolí, Rovná and U Hajnice.
